Breeding With Enderby Island Rabbits

Bleow is a creme kits only two weeks old.

In The Beginning

When the Rabbits first came off Enderby Island in 1992, some of them were given to different caregivers who were working under the watchful eye of the Rare Breeds Conservation Society. The breeding programmes seemed to be working well and there was a lot of success.

As time went on and the rabbits increased in population and with the lack of care givers, some care givers were asked to stop breeding.

In 1997 we became care givers of these rare rabbits, some of the Rare Breeds members at that time were concerned about how difficult it was to get these rabbits breeding again.

Maybe it is their diet

One of the Ideas and suggestions for helping the Enderby Rabbit to breed like a rabbit, was to look at the diet that the Enderby was exposed to on the Island, and this may be one of the keys to help them breed again.

Enderby Island has an area of 688 hectares (1700 acres) and is surrounded by lots of salt water. By adding more salt in their diet we would be providing the rabbits with what they were use to on the island.

Enderby Island has an area of 688 hectares (1700 acres) and is surrounded by lots of salt water. By adding more salt in their diet we would be providing the rabbits with what they were use to on the island. Some of the rabbits would have gone to the edge of the vegetation close to the beach on occasions, and probably nibbled on the seaweed that lay there, and the rabbits that were caught more towards the centre of the Island would have eaten food layered with salt from the sea breeze.

The other idea was the fibre content in their diet. On the Island the rabbits would have been exposed to a lot of different types of plants, grasses and shrubs, not really what we can offer them. Some of us, I am guilty of this as well, would give their rabbits a lovely plate of fruit salad, when you think about It, on Enderby Island that wasn’t what the rabbits had as a regular part of their diet.

The Enderby Island Rabbits do like more fibre. When you fill their house with new straw or cover the wire on the floor of their cages, they are like a little straw mulching machine, chewing most of the day and converting it into little round pellets.
Now our rabbits are given pellets for their meal with straw as a side salad.

A Few Things You Can Try

What you would expect from any other breed

What you get from an Enderby rabbit

Put doe with buck, mating can start straight away

Put doe with buck, doe can run around the cage with buck close behind or buck and doe can sit and look at each other

Put doe back into her cage

Leave doe with buck

Mark dates on calendar

Mark dates on calendar

Wait 31 days and you have your new litter of baby rabbits

You would be very
lucky to have a litter of rabbits 31 days later( keep this buck)

One method that has been resonably suscessful is to table mate the doe. This is not everyones preferred method, but I can say is has given a great result.
